The Evolution of the Range Rover: From Concept to Iconic Luxury SUV

In 1951, The Rover Company began experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series. This led to the development of the 'Road Rover' project, which was shelved in 1958 but eventually revived in 1966 by engineers Spen King and Bashford. Fast forward to 1970, when British Leyland launched the Range Rover line, marking the beginning of a legacy that would span over five decades.

The first Range Rover prototype was built in 1967, with plate number SYE 157F. The design of the vehicle was finalized in 1969, and it wasn't long before the production models hit the roads. In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the Americas from north to south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. This feat showcased the Range Rover's endurance and capability in challenging terrain.

The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1969 and 1970. The name 'Velar' was derived from the Italian word 'velare,' meaning to veil or cover, and was used as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. Interestingly, one of these pre-production models is now on exhibition at Huddersfield Land Rover Centre in West Yorkshire.

The first production model, YVB 153H, was believed to be the first off the line, as it was urgently needed for marketing purposes. Twenty-six Velar-badged engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970, with registration plates ranging from YVB151H to YVB177H.

Over the years, the Range Rover has undergone several transformations, with new models being launched under the same name. The Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar are just a few examples of the additional models that have been added to the lineup. Today, the Land Rover Range Rover is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover.
